Ambulance Review

Ambulance is an action thriller movie. It's produced by New Republic Pictures, Endeavor Content, Project X Entertainment, and Bay Films and distributed by Universal Pictures. Ambulance is written by Chris Fedak and directed by Michael Bay.

The story is decorated veteran Will Sharp is in desperate need of money to pay for his wife's medical bills. He teams up with his adoptive brother Danny to steal millions of dollars from a Los Angeles bank. With their getaway going horribly wrong, they hijack an ambulance but have another problem. That ambulance not only has an EMT worker, but a severely wounded cop. Now the two must not only outrun law enforcement, but also keep the officer alive.

Initial Reaction

Now the reason as to why I was excited for this movie was because of Michael Bay. If you wanna why I was excited for a Michael Bay film, despite what people say about him just read this. Then I saw the trailers, and given the trailers for Bay's previous films (minus The Island cause that one's marketing wasn't very good), I knew I was gonna get exactly what I promise from said trailers. So I was really excited to see yet another Bay action flick.

Cons

I've got nothing. Let's just move on.

Middle Ground

The only mix bag was the pacing. The first act goes by very quick, almost too quick actually. Then there are bits and pieces where everything does get slow. I'm almost willing to forgive that because once things move along, a lot of times scenes can have a wonderful fast pace to them.

Pros

Now let's talk about the positives, one of those being Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Jake Gyllenhaal's performances. Yahya did a fantastic job with his character. For the most part we see how conflicted his character is, just through Mateen II's facial expressions only. Then we have Jake's acting. He goes through a lot of emotions. One point he's in control then he's freaking out, then he just goes downright insane. Gyllenhaal's also been able to show that kind of range, but even with that knowledge, it's still great to see. What I also want to give the movie props for is the amount of intensity. There was quite a lot of moments where I felt intense and nervous during some scenes. Especially this one scene where they have to perform surgery, not only with everyone chasing them, but the fact that our characters don't know what they're doing. I was truly on edge during that part. Then there's the action. If you're a Michael Bay fan, then you'll like what's going on on screen. Put what also made it good, was that it does almost help you forget about the pacing issues. The last thing I'll give credit where it's due, is in Bay's directing. What made it fun this time around, was Bay was being slightly more experimental. Which could be expected, because this time Bay was using drones. So because of that, not only is  the camera quite literally flying, but we also get a lot of cool looking shots.

Ambulance is yet again another fun turn off your brain popcorn flick from Michael Bay. We've got great performances, intense sequences, fun action, and really good directing from Bay. The only slight issue was the pacing.

My final rating is Good.

That's going to do it for me. Come back on Thursday, Apr 14th for my Classic Film Night review of, Raging Bull. Until then, enjoy the rest of your day.
