Well folks here we are again, another edition of Is It True? This time it's all about James Bond and the Michael Bay film, The Rock. Let's get to it.
Who is James Bond & John Mason?
James Bond is a fictional spy who first appeared in Ian Fleming's 1953 novel Casino Royale. The character would then make his way into film with the 1962 film Dr. No, which was based on Ian Fleming's 1958 novel of the same name. Since that movie there have been a total of 25 movies in the James Bond film series.
John Mason is also a fictional spy who was later turned into a prisoner. He appears in the 1996 action film, The Rock. In that movie he was released from prison to help Stanley Goodspeed and a team of Navy seals sneak into Alcatraz Island (aka The Rock) to stop a terrorist attack.
The Theory
The theory goes that somewhere in the mid 1960s, James Bond was caught spying in the United States, he was later charged with espionage and was later locked up in Alcatraz.
The reason why people believe this theory is for many reasons actually. Other than Sean Connery played both characters, there are also lines that are thrown in there that are callbacks to Connery's Bond days. Such Connery's "but of course you are" line that he used in 1971 film Diamonds Are Forever. But it's not just lines, John Mason also has a long history of being part of the British Intelligence, and as everyone knows (whether they're a James Bond fan or not) James Bond is also a British spy.
Is The Theory Believable?
Now personally I don't think this theory is by any means true. If anything this was just the writers having fun. They knew they were gonna have Sean Connery and thought to themselves "Hey, let's throw in some James Bond easter eggs here and there. Just for the sake of fun".
Okay that's all for me. Come back on Thursday, Mar 10th for a brand new What You Probably Didn't Know About, for that one I'll be talking about the comedy classic, Animal House. Until then, enjoy the rest of your day.
