Reign of the Supermen is an animated direct-to-video comic book film based the comic book event of the same name. The movie is a sequel to 2018's The Death of Superman and the twelfth film in the DC Animated Movie Universe as well as the thirty-third movie in the DC Universe Animated Original Movies library. Reign of the Supermen is produced by Warner Bros. Animation and DC Films and distributed by Warner Bros. Home Entertainment. The film is written by Tim Sheridan and Jim Krieg and directed by Sam Liu.
The story is after the death of Superman by the hands of Doomsday, Metropolis is left without a hero. Then one day not one not two not three but four new Supermen appear all claiming to be Superman. However while citizens of Metropolis and the Supermen themselves are having this debate, a deadly force is coming to Earth.
Initial Reaction
So since I enjoyed The Death of Superman so much I was definitely looking forward to the sequel Reign of the Supermen. And like I said in my review of The Death of Superman it was about time we got a new animated Superman film after so many other non-related solo Superman films.
Cons
One thing I'm still not liking is Rainn Wilson's voice for Lex Luthor. Like I said in my Death of Superman review the voice just sounds too nasally. The other thing I wasn't all that for was Superboy's design. Now yes he is a teenager so I wasn't expecting him to look exactly like Superman or look like the Superboy from Young Justice because then that would have been lazy but he looked more like he was twelve than sixteen.
Middle Ground
The only thing I felt like the filmmakers could have done more on is The Eradicator. While he does serve his purpose to the story it still felt like he took a back seat to Steel, Superboy, and Cyborg Superman.
Pros
Now to get this out way the animation is good. Once again DC shows that yes while you're on a direct-to-video budget that doesn't mean your film has to be completely cheap. The other part of the movie I liked was all of the fights with the Supermen. From Superboy vs. The Eradicator to Superman vs. Cyborg Superman. Another aspect of Reign of the Supermen I enjoyed is Superboy. While he still has his own dark storyline with Lex Luthor he was still a fun character. Now the film does do a good job adapting the story arc. Yes it does have some changes here and there but so do some of the other comic book films. But overall it keeps some story elements while at the same time adding something new. The last thing I'll give Reign of the Supermen praise for is the post- credit scene. I won't give it away but it does leave you interested for the next film in the DC Animated Movie Universe.
Reign of the Supermen is a worthy sequel to The Death of Superman. The animation is nice, the fight scenes with the Supermen were awesome, Superboy was an entertaining character despite going through his own struggles, the movie does adapt the original story pretty well, and the post-credit scene leaves you curious for the next movie in this universe. The Eradicator could have used more work in the story that way it didn't feel pushed to the back. My only complaints were Superboy's design and once again Rainn's Lex voice.
My final rating is Good
So guys that's going to do it for me. Come back on Saturday, January 19th for my review of M. Night Shyamalan's newest film Glass. Until then enjoy the rest of your day.
