Ready Player One Review

Ready Player One is a science fiction action adventure film. The movie is based Ernest Cline's 2011 novel of the same name. Ready Player One is produced by Warner Bros. Pictures, Village Roadshow Pictures, Amblin Entertainment, Amblin Partners, and De Line Pictures, and Farah Films and Management and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures. The film is written by Ernest Cline and Zak Penn and directed by Steven Spielberg.

The story is it's the year 2045, people can escape the harsh reality of the real world by using the program OASIS. One day a contest is announced by the creator of OASIS James Halliday. Whoever wins this contest will inherit his fortune.

Initial Reaction

I was fully looking forward to this film just because of the director. I didn't want to see anything about this movie. Now yes I did see posters but other than that nothing. No trailers, no videos on YouTube and/or Twitter, and no commercials. So hopefully the film delivers on all the hype surrounding it.

Cons

One problem the film has is exposition, the film does a lot of more telling than showing. For example Wade (our main hero) will explain the OASIS to us even though what's happening is already being shown thus we get the idea.

Middle Ground

One thing that is okay about the Ready Player One is the characters. I did not in no way felt they were bland or boring but they could have used more development. We get glimpses of who they are and where they come from but not much else.

Pros

Now since this film does have a lot of pop culture icons appear or references a lot of people were worried if the film would rely on these a lot. But for me personally they didn't bother me at all. Mainly because the film focuses on the quest for Halliday's contest and something like an Atari video game would just so happen to be a clue. It's not like The Emoji Movie were they dedicate an entire scene that just feels like a shameless plug. Another thing I liked about Ready Player One is the action. Now so far this year I've only seen three action films those being Black Panther, Tomb Raider, and Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay and Ready Player One blows those movies out of the water. There is so much craziness going on that you would have to be the biggest stooge not to enjoy those sequences. Now to give my opinion on the world of the OASIS. The OASIS clearly had to be animated since well it's basically a video game. And the animation is amazing. There's so much detail put into that world that my words to it no justice and you have to see it for yourself. The performances for this movie are so well done. The best actor in the film is Ben Medelsohn as Nolan Sorrento. He was an excellent villain.

Ready Player One is definitely an exciting thrill ride. The pop culture easter eggs/references didn't bother me nor were they shamefully just plugins, the action leaves you at the end of your seat, the animation of the OASIS is stunning, and the performances are great. The film has alright characters but they still needed a lot more development. And the film really needed to tone down the exposition.

My final rating is Good
