Venom Review

Venom is a comic book film based on the Marvel anti-hero Eddie Brock/Venom. The movie is produced by Columbia Pictures, Marvel Entertainment, Arad Productions, Matt Tolmach Productions, and Pascal Pictures and distributed by Sony Pictures. Venom is written by Kelly Marcel, Will Beall, Jeff Pinkner, and Scott Rosenberg and directed by Ruben Fleischer.

The story is after a scandal Eddie Brock is trying to revive his journalist career. He thinks the best way to do this is to investigate the Life Foundation. Then Eddie bonds with a symbiote that gives him superhuman abilities. With the Life Foundation wanting to kill Eddie and get back the symbiote both Brock and the alien suit must work together in order to take down the villainous corporation.

Initial Reaction

Since that first teaser trailer I was fully pumped for this movie. Mainly because I like the character of Eddie Brock/Venom, he's a total badass and a great villain and sometimes anti-hero. What also got me excited was it looked like Sony was going to do Venom right, to kind of make up for with what happened with Spider-Man 3.

Cons

The only thing I didn't really like was the post-credit scene. I won't say what it is because it's a spoiler. All I'll say is when I watched it it just felt like I was watching a commercial for another Sony project.

Middle Ground

One thing I'm stuck in a grey area on is Charlton Drake. He has some scenes where he's a pretty good villain but other times he's pretty standard. I don't know if maybe that's what the writers were going for that way if the film gets a sequel they'll have more stand out villains. But I just felt like they could have done a lot more with him. Another character who's alright is Anne. She is a serviceable supporting character and she did get two cool moments during the third act of the film. It's just much like Charlton I wish they could have done more. What the film also needed a little more work on was the CGI. There are plenty of times were it's really good but then there are times when it's not the bad it's just okay.

Pros

One of two things that were the highlight of the movie were Tom Hardy's performance. He was really good at playing Eddie and he's performance got even better when Eddie got merged with Venom. The other highlight of the movie was the banter between Eddie and Venom. Those two going back and forth was just hilarious. Speaking of hilarious I was surprised by how much comedy was in this. Now I'm not saying it's a straight up comedy film because it's not always trying to shoot for a laugh ever minute. The humor is very minimal. Another thing I think you'll like about Venom is Venom himself. He has a great look and he's definitely the big monster you wanted and payed to see. The other thing I'll say about the movie is the action is awesome. It's very fast paced and two of my favorite scenes were the bike chase and the fight between Venom and Riot. My final thought of Venom is I loved the mid-credit scene. I can't say anything about it because once again it's a spoiler. What i will say is it definitely gets me excited for a possible sequel.

Venom is by no means the awful movie critics are making it out to be nor is it going to be considered a masterpiece. But it is entertaining. Tom Hardy is great, the banter with Eddie and Venom was funny, the humor is good, Venom's design is perfect for what it is, I liked the action, and the mid-credit scene will make any comic book fan getty. The things the film could have done better is Charlton/Anne's characters and the CGI. The only thing I didn't care for was the post-credit scene.
