The Bubble Review

The Bubble is a meta comedy film. The movie is produced by Apatow Productions and distributed by Netflix. The Bubble is written by Judd Apatow and Pam Brady and directed by Judd Apatow.

The story it's the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, because of this no one can really work on their films. However, one group of actors and actress are determined to get the sixth installment of their hit franchise, Cliff Beasts made. So they travel to England to a closed film set to make their movie, hopefully everything goes according to plan.

Initial Reaction

I didn't know about this movie at first. It wasn't until I got onto Twitter and Geek Vibes Nation tweeted how Netflix released a trailer for Cliff Beasts 6: The Battle for Everest. I thought "This can't be real" and "If this is the sixth movie for a franchise than where is Cliff Beasts 1-5?" And yeah we were all right when we said it wasn't real, but instead it was a marketing plan for the movie. Which I thought was brilliant. Even more so cause Netflix went as far as to release a video where the fictional franchise's timeline is explained. So I fell for this movie because of pretty funny marketing. What also got me interested was Judd Apatow was writing and directing. Sure not everything he's made work, but he has made some good movies. Like The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story, Funny People, and many others.

Cons

One major problem is the runtime. It's far too long for a comedy. I think that's how it is for most of Judd Apatow's comedy films, but for here it didn't work. It just felt so slow and also felt like the movie just kept going. I almost felt like there was no end in sight. My other issue with The Bubble was the comedy. I thought it started out pretty strong, then it turned to hit and miss, and then my laughter just turned into one chuckle. What also didn't help was the fact that they felt the need to include a TikTok star and just TikTok in general. It was just really? Did we really need to include a social media site, where a lot of people just consider it a bane of an existence? What also wasn't helping this film was the many storylines. At first it seems it's just gonna be about the Cliff Beasts movie being made. But then we get a story about the stars starting their relationship again, an actor and director clashing, one actor falling in love, the COVID nonsense, and producers and executives butting heads. A lot of these stories pretty much went nowhere, and because of that they didn't feel necessary. One big example of that was the COVID plot. That had it strong at the beginning, then it popped up here and there, and then it seemed like it just went away completely despite the fact we still see people wearing masks.

Middle Ground

I've got nothing.

Pros

The truly good thing about the film was our cast. From Karen Gillan to Pedro Pascal to Keegan-Michael Key and David Duchovny. They all did a really good job despite the material they had to work with. The cast is really the only reason to watch the whole movie.

The Bubble is a really disappointing movie. It almost felt like a dollar store version of Tropic Thunder. It's too long by comedy movie standards. The humor started out strong but as the movie continued it just got worse, and there's too many stories going on and some of them didn't even feel like they needed to be there. The only upside was the cast and their performances.

My final rating is Awful.

So...that sadly turned into a waste of time. Anyhow, that's going to do it for me. Come back on Thursday, Apr 7th for a post about film director Michael Bay. I think you'll might be surprised of what I got to say about the guy. Until then, enjoy the rest of your day.
