Raiders of The Lost Media - Mortal Kombat HD Arcade Kollection

Welcome back to one of my favorite segments Raiders of The Lost Media, and this time I'll talk about a lost Mortal Kombat game. So let's get started.

Part One - What is The Mortal Kombat HD Arcade Kollection?

The Mortal Kombat HD Arcade Kollection or Mortal Kombat HD Kollection was a planned fighting game remake featuring three Mortal Kombat titles, those being Mortal Kombat, Mortal Kombat II, and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3. The game was being developed by Other Ocean Interactive and was planned to be for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Windows PC.

Part Two - Brief History

The remake was going to be a complete overhaul of the games. Meaning they were going to have new digitized sprites for all of the characters, new sound effects, and an UI (user interface), and a asset overhaul to visually upgrade the game for modern standards. The three games would be released in their arcade form for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Windows PC. The project was never formally announced it was going to be released as a digital-download set for arcade ports.  On September 22, 2010 gaming website GameSpot released at story saying gaming retailers stories such as GAME and GameStop would release the game on November 16, 2010, less than half year before Mortal Kombat (2011) was to be released. However later on listings were quickly pulled and no news came ever since. Then in May of 2011 a game titled Mortal Kombat Kollection would be announced but this was not the game people were curious about. You see the game wasn't an HD remake it was only a port of the three games. They did however tout it as "arcade perfect", with certain sound effects that were not in the original Mortal Kombat game. Things such as an applause sound for The Courtyard arena and a crackling effect for Raiden's lighting. It's never been fully disclosed just how far progress with the game went. But given all of the information from multiple sources who helped make the game many stages, characters, and other assets many things seemed to be completed before the project was ultimately cancelled.

Part Three - Pictures

Since it's cancellation there has been many pictures released to the public showcasing the game. Hell we actually have a 4 timeline showing these pictures.

On Jun 4, 2011 John Montenegro (an artist for Other Ocean) posted his original mock-ups of the game. These images included character bios, in-game menus, and endings.

Then on Feb 19, 2013 Jeremy Kohar (a 3D artist for Other Ocean) posted on his blog 3D models of Mileena's head and Animalities for Stryker, Liu Kang, and Cyrax.

Stryker's Animality

Liu Kang's Animality

Cyrax's Animality

Then on May 3rd, 2014 make-up artist Tanea Brooks released a ton of behind the scenes photos of the actors who participated in the project. I mean a lot, so many that it's best if you just click here to see those pictures.

Later on Nov 6, 2015 Ed Boon (the creator of Mortal Kombat) released a picture on his official Twitter. In the tweet he says "Hi-Res Kombat ... one of these days I'll post an article explaining how the MK HD edition never came to be". The tweet also had this picture to it.

Although the image is kind of questionable. Mainly because it could just be a mockup or incomplete since the features of the image has the original courtyard but yet Liu Kang is in his Mortal Kombat II  clothes while Sonya Blade is in her Ultimate Mortal Kombat III attire.

Well that's going to do it for me. And I hope you enjoyed this installment of Raiders of The Lost Media. If you want to check out my other post just click on anything that's orange.
