Greyhound Review

Greyhound is a war drama movie based on the 1955 novel The Good Shepherd by C.S. Forester. The movie is produced by Columbia Pictures, Stage 6 Films, Bron Creative, Zhengfu Pictures, Sycamore Pictures, FilmNation Entertainment, and Playtone and distributed by Apple TV+. Greyhound is written by Tom Hanks and directed by Aaron Schneider.

The story is Commander Ernest Krause has finally be given his chance to command a destroyer. He's given a big task on his first day, cross the North Atlantic trench and try to survive a wolfpack on German U-boats. While this is happening Krause must also fight his own self doubts and personal demons.

Initial Reaction

Truth be told I almost didn't even see this movie. I only discovered it like I think two maybe three weeks ago, either way when I really started watching the trailer and got even more excited that Tom Hanks was going to start in it, I made it a priority to watch then review it.

Cons

I've got nothing to say. Let's move on.

Middle Ground

To many people it was probably really awesome that this movie was only 90 minutes long. Because that meant they could just sit down, press play, watch it, and next thing they knew it was over. But for me while I didn't have that much of an issue with the runtime I still think it should have been longer. I don't know something was really telling me in my head while I was watching the movie that it should have been longer even though I was enjoying the 90 minutes from beginning, middle, to end. Another mix bag with Greyhound is characterization. While we do get quite a bit of character and/or character development there still could have been more to these people. So while the characters aren't bad there still could've been more to them, it's serviceable.

Pros

One thing I thought the movie did well at was showing the horrors of war. The film doesn't have a R rating but they do things in this to give you an idea of what it was like during this time. Those echoed screams were very haunting. Another I think you'll enjoy about Greyhound is the action. Anytime this characters had to get ready to fight it was really exciting. In matter of fact whenever there was an action scene going on I found my eyes glued to the screen. The final thing I'll give the movie credit for is Tom Hanks' performance. Even when he says or does nothing you can just tell what he was feeling during that scene or scenes.

Greyhound is a enjoyable watch. It showcases the horrors of war without having to get too gruesome, fun action scenes, and a good performance from Tom Hanks. The grey areas are the runtime and the characters.
