Venom: Let There Be Carnage Review

 

Venom: Let There Be Carnage (or simply Venom 2) is a comic book movie and the sequel to 2018's Venom, as well as the second movie in Sony's Spider-Man Universe. The film is produced by Columbia Pictures, Marvel Entertainment, and Tencent Pictures and distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing. Venom: Let There Be Carnage is written by Tom Hardy and Kelly Marcel and directed by Andy Serkis.

The story is it's been over a year since the events of the last movie, and there's a bit of rift between Eddie and the symbiote named Venom. While this is troubling, Eddie still wants to reignite his career as a journalist, he thinks the best course of action would be to interview serial killer Cletus Kasady. But when Cletus gets his own symbiote named Carnage, Eddie and Venom must put aside their differences and put an end to this nightmare.

Why The Delay?

Now if any of read my review for Dune you would've seen that I said I would have my review for this post on Oct 2nd, and then when the day came there was no review. So what happened? I got seriously sick. I was so ill I couldn't really do anything other than drink ginger ale, drink Dayquil, drink Nyquil, go to the bathroom, and sleep all day and night. I couldn't even hold my phone in my hands without my hands shaking. That's how bad things were, and because of my illness I couldn't give you a delayed post like a did every other time. Hopefully that won't happen again.

Initial Reaction

Now because I liked the first movie, naturally I would be excited about this one. Especially since we were gonna get Carnage, one of my many favorite Marvel supervillains. Granted, I was a little disappointed because the movie is rated PG-13 instead the R rating I was hoping for. But the trailers did a really good job of making me want to see the movie even more.

Cons

The only issue I took with the movie was the relationship between Cletus and Shriek. I didn't full blown hate it, I just wasn't really that invested in it.

Middle Ground

Now my grey area with this is the same as the first movie, and that's the CGI. Although this time I think there was a majority improvements, it still did feel like just a tiny bit more work could've been done.

Pros

Now let's get to give credit to the movie and one the positives was Andy Serkis' directing. The guy directed a wonderful movie, and gave the movie a lot of awesome shots. Two of my favorites being when Carnage is in front of sainted glass and there was also this one shot where we have Venom in the rain. Really great work from Serkis. What I also want to praise the movie for is the humor. There were a lot of great funny moments sprinkled throughout the movie, I think my favorite bit was when Anne and Dan go to Mrs. Chen's, that scene was just awesome. Another thing I liked about Venom: Let There Be Carnage was the performances from Tom Hardy and Woody Harrelson. Tom once again knocks it out of the park with Eddie Brock, but Woody Harrelson was spectacular as Cletus Kasady. The dude nailed the insanity and the sinister glee of that character. Speaking of Cletus, this villain was definitely an improvement over Carlton Drake/Riot. And not only because Carnage is just a better villain compared to Riot but, because we also got quite a bit of character for Cletus. We really got to know a lot about his history. What also made the movie pretty good was the action. You're definitely not gonna be bored with this one. The absolutely best action scene was the final showdown between Venom and Carnage. I loved that scene. The last thing I want to praise about the movie is the mid-credit scene. I won't give anything away, but I does leave you curious about what's gonna happen next?

I really enjoyed Venom: Let There Be Carnage. It has good directing from Andy Serkis, a great sense of humor, amazing performances from both Tom Hardy and Woody Harrelson, Carnage was an awesome villain, we got some great action, and that was a pretty interest mid-credit scene. The CGI has improved a lot in some areas, but it still could've better. The only thing I didn't care for was the relationship between Cletus and Shriek.

My final rating is Good.
