Rampage is a science-fiction monster film loosely based on the video game series of the same name. The movie is produced by New Line Cinema, Flynn Picture Company, Rickard Pictures, and Seven Bucks Productions and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures. Rampage is written by Ryan Engle, Carlton Cuse, Ryan J. Condall, and Adam Sztykiel and directed by Brad Peyton.
The story is Primatologist Davis Okoye has a strong bond with George, an intelligent albino gorilla who he has taken care of since birth. One day George gets an infection from a rouge experiment. Just to make matters worse not only is George infected but also a wolf and an crocodile. Can Davis and company find a cure or will the world be destroyed by these giant beast?
Initial Reaction
When I saw the first two trailers I thought to myself "who know it's a movie based on a video game and those always turn out to be terrible but this film could be a fun giant monster movie". And that's basically my thought all the way through out from January to April. It's a video game movie that could suck but maybe it won't suck and it will just be an enjoyable monsters destroying a city flick.
Cons
I've got nothing to say. So let's move on.
Middle Ground
One thing I'm conflicted with is the movie did ditch the whole humans becoming the monsters. Many people brought up that if they keep that element from the game it would have added more dramatic tension. Which is true but the way it was executed in the film wasn't all that bad. It still doesn't change the fact that Chicago is being attacked by monsters. What I'm saying is sure it would have been good to have that element but the film was still entertaining regardless. Another part of the film that was a grey area for me was the CGI. Basically when the animals are in broad daylight the CG looks... weird, like it's slightly finished but still needed more details put into it. But when the colors are more tone down and dark the CGI is good.
Pros
One thing you'll like about the film is Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Jeffrey Dean Morgan. They really brought their charisma for their roles. Also if any of you are Walking Dead fans Jeffrey's character definitely has some bits of Negan in him. Throughout the whole movie I got sort of a B-movie vibe from Rampage. Which isn't at all a bad case for this film. Cause then it kind of has a little bit of a charm to it. The movie has a pretty good sense of humor. Which felt like a good idea on the writers part. Because there really wasn't a reason for this film to take itself so seriously considering the story is basically just an excuse to destroy a city with giant monsters. Now to discuss the one thing that title is all about. And yes there is quite a bit of rampaging through the movie. So many people complained that there wasn't enough, but that's completely false because the film provides a good amount of destruction. Especially in the final act that part of the film was insane.
Rampage to me is the prime definition of a popcorn movie. You're not there expecting to care about the story or character development. You just want to be entertained by giant monsters destroying stuff and you get that. Dwayne and Jeffrey's performances are good, I like how the film had a B-movie feel to it, the humor is well done, and you definitely get that rampage. The only thing that's a little bit iffy is the CGI and eliminating the human part on the monster's transformation.
My final rating is Okay

Great cast but its another mindless, heartless giant monster flick destroying the city and trampling everyone. I wonder why the latest Godzilla movie got a bad rap but glorified B-movies like this and Kong Skull Island gets applauded. The monsters are obvious cgi hiding behind dense action sequences, the evil corporate guys are stereotypes from other monster, sci-fi movies we have seen a thousand times before and the military OF COURSE are worthless fodder. > Reviews Rampage 2018 Tiny humvees closing in on very fast gigantic animals firing their machineguns knowing previously how that worked out, Apache helicopters firing at close range at a giant wolf's face with his worthless cannon instead of using guided rockets from a distance, and soldiers go out of their way to be squished like bugs (ala Kong Skull Island style). Its that kind of thing you would see a child playing in his sandbox and destroying his toys. I would have understood if it was a child that made this movie.
