The Meg Review

The Meg is a action-horror film based on the 1997 novel Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror. The movie is produced by Warner Bros. Pictures, Gravity Pictures, Flagship Entertainment, Apelles Entertainment, and Di Bonaventura Pictures, and Maeday Productions and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures (United States/International) and Gravity Pictures (China). The Meg is written by Dean Georgaris, Jon Hoeber and Erich Hoeber and directed by Jon Turteltaub.

The story is two hundred miles off the Chinese coast a giant shark called a Megalodon has attacked a research submersible, leaving the crew stranded. Diver Jonas Taylor has been called in to rescue the crew and stop the beast. But will Jonas come out on top or the creature reign supreme?

Initial Reaction

Now I'm going to be honest. I was actually looking forward to this film, mainly because come on who doesn't love a turn-off your brain monster flick? I mean Rampage did it and that film became a success. However there was a part of me who thought The Meg could be another Shark Attack 3: Megalodon. Although to be fair when that movie has lines like this

or special effects like these

OM NOM NOM

Un aperitivo

There's no way you could set the bar any lower.

Cons

One thing I couldn't get invested in was Rainn Wilson as a bad guy. I fully admit I'm not an advid follower of this actor so don't take my opinion to heart. Now as I was saying I didn't believe he was the bad guy hell I had to keep reminding myself that over and over again. When the movie ended the end credit quite literally was "Fin". I thought that was really cheesey. Even for this kind of flick.

Middle Ground

The Meg does contain bits of humor. Which is fine but there were those times were it just didn't do it for me.

Pros

One thing I thought the film did well at was building tension before the Megalodon attacked. Those moments of build up did leave me anxious and waiting for the shark to attack. Another thing I liked were the special effects of The Meg. The shark in no way ever looks bad or looks like something you expect from a straight-to-video or something for SyFy. All of the effects were good. The main highlight of the film was Jason Statham and Li BingBing. They surprisingly had good chemistry together. All of the scenes with them did for the most part felt like people talking to each other and not them clearly reading a script.

The Meg is what I feel like is this year's Deep Blue Sea (only not as violent). You're not going into the movie expecting Jaws but a turn-off your brain shark movie. The film has great visual effects, pretty good tension with the shark, and good performances from our main stars. The humor ranges from hit to miss. The only thing I couldn't buy was Wilson as a villain and the whole Fin as The End.
