How the Grinch Stole Christmas (1966) Review

How the Grinch Stole Christmas was a 1966 animated television special based on the Dr. Seuss book of the same name. The special was produced by Cat in the Hat Productions and MGM Animation/Visual Arts and distributed by MGM Television. How the Grinch Stole Christmas was written by Dr. Seuss and directed by Chuck Jones and Ben Washam.

The story is it's Christmas time for the Whos down in Whoville. Everyone is celebrating this wonderful holiday, everyone expect the Grinch. Fed up with all of the celebrating and noises, he sets out to steal their Christmas, and never have to deal with this holiday ever again.

  • Negatives

I've got nothing to say. Let's move on.

  • Mix

I've got nothing to say. Let's move on.

  • Positives

Let's get this one of the way. The theme song, "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch". Is an all time classic, no debate about. Such as classic that even if nobody watched see this one, or the live-action movie starring Jim Carry, or the movie released back in 2018, everyone knows the song.

Then we have the voice work. It really only comes down to Boris Karloff who plays said Grinch, and he does an amazing job. Whenever I repeat the "and all the noise, noise, noise, noise" line, that's the one that me and many other people try to copy. Boris truly carried this whole entire special.

What also made this such a Christmas classic is that's it's perfect adaptation of Dr. Seuss' work. It followed the book through and through. So if anybody does have issues with the 2000 film and the 2018 flick putting some stuff in there, that maybe they don't like they can just watch this.

The last thing I'll give praise to is the animation. For 60's animation is amazing. Although Chuck Jones did work on and his one of the best animators from his time, so I guess nobody should be surprised. But whenever I watched this movie, and the Grinch does a hilarious facial expression (especially the famous evil smile when he gets an awful idea. A wonderful *awful* idea), that to me, always felt the animators were having fun with this.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas (1966) is a true Christmas classic. It's got a memorable song, great voice work, perfect adaptation, and the animation is timeless.

My final rating is A Must Watch.

Well, that's all for me. Come back on Saturday, Dec 4th for my review of the newest Disney+ movie, Diary of a Wimpy Kid. Until then, enjoy the rest of your day, and I hope this Christmas season treats you well.
