Cinematic Disasters - Supergirl

Supergirl is a 1984 British superhero film based on the DC Comics' character Supergirl. The film was the fourth movie in the Christopher Reeve series. It's produced by Artistry, Investors In Industry, Robert Fleming Leasing, and St. Michael Finance. Supergirl was distributed by TriStar Pictures and Columbia-EMI-Warner. The movie was written by David Odell and directed by Jeannot Szwarc.

The story is Argo City has lost it's power source the Omegahedron. Without it the city and Kryptonian's are doomed. So Kara-Zor El decides to take it upon herself to retrieve it before it's too late.

Before I start the review let me tell you a few things about the movie. Apparently Supergirl is so bad that is actually did finically worse than Superman IV: The Quest for Peace. Supergirl grossed $14.3 million against it's $35 million budget where Superman IV: The Quest for Peace grossed $36.7 million against it's $17 million budget. The film also took the longest time to be put out on DVD. It wasn't released on DVD until 2006 and that was just because Superman Returns was coming out. The film is also so bad that even thought it's canon in the Christopher Reeve series it was never brought up or referenced in Superman IV: The Quest for Peace.

My Thoughts

One thing that really confused me is Argo City. They show other Kryptonians are on a ship big enough for what looks like a small village. This brings up so many questions

1. Did Zaltor (one of Argo City's leading scientist in this film) also know about Krypton's destruction too? And if he did why didn't he work with Jor-El to help save their race?

2. On this ship we see that Kara's Mom and Dad are here and since their part of Superman's family did they even try to contact them? I'm pretty sure Jor-El and Lara would have loved to have heard the news that there's a ship big enough for them and their infant son.

3. Were they any more of this ships or is it just this one ship?

It's amazing how that was only the beginning of the movie and I already thought of three questions about this one scene.

The power source know as the Omegahedron can apparently do anything. It goes from creating life to giving plain normal people powers and is strong enough to power an entire colony ship. This is a bad thing because that just makes the Omegahedron one big lazy plot point.

The movie has a huge WTF moment in where we see Kara's ship fly towards Earth then when we get to Earth she's now in the water and when she jumps out she's already in her Supergirl costume. I'm not making that up it actually happened.

Our main villain is a witch named Selena and she has the absolute worse motivation I've ever heard in a movie. Her big motive is she wants to bang her gardener Ethan by any means necessary. That's not a joke that's her big scheme. She just wants to have sex with her young and handsome gardener nothing more nothing less.

The special effects in Supergirl are cheap. There are times in this movie when you can plainly tell the actors were in front on a green screen. Then there's probably the worse effect I've ever seen in a superhero movie. During the final fight between Supergirl and Selena. Selena summons a big demon or some kind of monster and it's stretches her. Get a load of this.

If I was a studio executive or the director and I saw that. I would have pushed the films release date back until that effect was better or never release it because no way would that have been in theaters on my watch.

When Supergirl is discovering her powers there's a scene where she picks up a flower and uses her heat vision on it. Instead of it bursting into flames it blooms. Did the writers even know how heat vision works. When you use heat vision on a plant it will catch on fire not blossom.

Everyone in this movie is an idiot. I'm not saying that to be a jerk I actually mean everyone is an idiot. No one questions the fact the Supergirl is here or ask how is there another Kryptonian that has Superman's powers. There's also a scene where Selena makes a mountain appear in the middle of the town and again nobody questions it. They just look at the it like "oh there's now a mountain there...okay". Then there's this scene between Supergirl and two truckers.

Despite this woman picking up one trucker by his jaw then blowing him to a wooden fence so hard he goes threw it. The other trucker still thinks it's a good idea to take out his knife. Like I said before everyone in this movie is dumb.

When Supergirl goes after the Omegahedron a large majority of the time she not even looking for it. That thing powers her entire colony so without it they could all die so time is of the essence. But instead of doing that Kara decides to go to an all girl's school, hangout with friends, or do nothing. Way to endanger your entire race their Supergirl.

The acting in Supergirl is just bad. Before I tell you about everybody else's acting let me be a little positive for one moment I actually think Helena Slater did pretty good job as Kara-Zor El/Supergirl she was the highlight of this entire movie. But now onto everybody else. All the actors are either over the top or they have the right emotion but their facial expression just makes them looked bored.

Supergirl is one the worse if not the worse superheroine movie ever. The Omeghedron is just a plot convenience, the story isn't anything special, the villain's motive is terrible, every character is a moron, the special effects range from awful to laughable, and even thought Helena is good everybody else's acting is bad.

My final rating is Awful

So I hoped you enjoyed another Cinematic Disaster and you know what I've been picking on DC and their films a little too much. I think it's time I look at a bad Marvel movie. That film will 1990's Captain America. That review will be in September.
