Underrated Films - The Nice Guys Review

The Nice Guys is a 2016 neo-noir action comedy produced by Silver Pictures, Waypoint Entertainment, and RatPac-Dune Entertainment. The film's distributor is Warner Bros. Pictures. The movie was written by Shane Black and Anthony Bagarozzi and directed by Shane Black.

The story is private eye Holland March and enforcer Jackson Healy team up to find a missing a girl named Amelia Kuttner. During their investigation they discover she's somehow connected to the death of adult film star Misty Mountains.

Why It's Underrated

While the movie did do well critical many critics putting it on their best movies of 2016 and there was plenty of marketing the biggest problem was not many people saw it. The film's budget was $50 million but it only grossed $57.3 million. Which infuriates me because I hear so people both online and in public say Hollywood isn't being creative but then an original movie comes out and hardly any of them support it.

Why It's Worth Watching

Now like I said before this movie is it's own original thing. It's not based on a book, a previous established film series, or an old TV show it's original. Don't get me wrong I do like whenever there's a new superhero movie but it just feels like a breath of fresh air when filims like this come out.

This film is hilarious. There are so many scenes that had me balling. One of my favorites is when Holland and Jackson are at a protest trying to get information. I'm not going to give too much away you just have to watch it. My words just aren't enough.

One thing that really surprised me was the chemistry between Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe. They did so well together that I wish their characters would so up again for a sequel.

The film's mystery does a good job keeping you interested. Some things revolving around the death of Misty Mountains took turns I didn't expect.

My biggest praise for The Nice Guys is it took it's time developing Holland and Jackson's friendship. It wasn't "oh your working on the same case I am. Well let's team-up and be friends". Nothing like that at all. There are scenes were their not evening talking about the case they just sit down and get to know each other.

Accomplishments

Even though the film didn't get the right amount of money it was nominated for many awards. The AARP Annual Movies for Grownups Awards nominated it for Best Buddy Picture, Critics' Choice Awards nominated it for both Beat Comedy & Best Actor in a Comedy, and the Empire Awards had it nominated for three awards Best Comedy, Beat Female Newcomer, and Best Screenplay. The Nice Guys' biggest accolades were it own 4th place in the Golden Tomato Awards for Best Comedy Movie(2016) and Ryan Gosling won Best Comedic Performance by the San Diego Film Critic Society.

So I hoped you all enjoyed another edition of Underrated Films. I do plan to do another one I just don't know what the next film will be. Once I find the right movie I'll tell you. Also I've got some bad news to tell you on Saturday.
