Hey everybody it's time for another edition of my favorite segment. Raiders of The Lost Media. And this time I tell you about the cancelled tie-in video game The Avengers.

Part One - What was The Avengers video game?

The Avengers was a THQ first person shooter/beat'em up video game. It was set to be release in 2012 to coincide with the Marvel film with the same name. It was not to be tied to or be based around the film. The story for the game would have been inspired by the Marvel Comics crossover event "Secret Invasion".

Part Two - Gameplay

The game would have had players choice Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk, or Thor where you would have to play in a single player campaign with a co-op mode. Players could also switch between a first person point-of-view and a third person point-of-view. The game was also going to follow much of the film's plot and would go through levels from famous scenes like The Battle of New York, Triskelion, The Helicarrier, and a Skrull mothership.

Part Three - Development & Cancellation

In 2010, THQ acquired the rights from Marvel with development handled by THQ Studio Australia with sourced development handled by Blue Tongue Entertainment to create a video game based on team members from The Avengers. The reason from the game being in first-person perspective was because the developers wanted to try something different from previous Marvel games. They wanted the players to see through the eyes of the characters. The story was to be something original but at the same time borrow elements from the "Secret Invasion" story arc with Brian Michael Bendis, who wrote the arc was brought in to write the script for the game. The main consoles were going to the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360. A PC port was also being developed with Blue Tongue Entertainment handling it. Plans for a Wii U port were also being considered around the system's launch and a port for the Xbox Kinect was also considered. If they had made one for the Kinect it would have featured a mode called "Avengers Training Academy". Where a player would have taken control of a rookie superhero to fight along side the Avengers. However both plans for the Wii U and the Kinect would later be cut from production.

During Mid-2011, the game was struggling to keep up with development what with THQ having financial problems with their latest game Homefront and their gaming graphics tablet the uDraw because of the failure of these products the company lost a total of $100 million. Then to make matters worse the value of the Australian dollar would rise, causing THQ to pay their employees in Australia more than their domestic employees. And because their domestic division was making money and they were paying their Australian employees more THQ made the decision to shut down both their Australian studio and Blue Tongue Entertainment. In the last few weeks THQ reached out to Marvel Entertainment in hopes of getting continuing funding but sadly Marvel refused. Then after that the game was officially cancelled.

Part Four - Marvel Avengers: Battle for Earth

After the cancellation, THQ sold the rights to Ubisoft. After acquiring the license Ubisoft would make their own Avengers video game that being called Marvel Avengers: Battle for Earth. The game would borrowing some elements from the previous project such as the Secret Invasion storyline. The game was released for the Xbox 360 and the Wii U on October 20, 2012.
