Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay is an animated film based on the DC Comics' team the Suicide Squad. It's the thirty-first DC animated movie in the DC Universe Animated Original Movies library and the ninth film in the DC Animated Movie Universe. The film is produced by Warner Bros. Animation and DC Entertainment and distributed by Warner Bros. Home Entertainment. Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay is written by Alan Burnett and directed by Sam Liu.
The story is Amanda Waller as formed a team of supervillains called the Suicide Squad. She commands this team to go retrieve a mystical item. However just when the squad thinks their the only ones after it other villains arrive who also want the object. Will the Suicide Squad succeed in their mission or will it end in failure?
Initial Reaction
Now I was really looking forward to this one for two reasons. The main reason is after Batman: Assault on Arkham it peaked my interest for more Suicide Squad animated movies. My other reason being so far the DC Animated Movie Universe have ranged from good to okay so I figured if the film isn't good hopefully it will be somewhat decent.
Cons
One thing I didn't like about the film is Maxum Steel. Now they gave us a backstory about him that really didn't need to take so long to explain. Now yes it does further the plot but all it just felt like the backstory could have easily been told in maybe two minutes.
Middle Ground
Christian Slater plays Deadshot and while he's performance is solid at best his voice doesn't seem to fit the character. It's just when I hear Slater speak I don't hear Deadshot I hear Christian Slater. But like I said before he's performance is fine.
Pros
One thing I liked about Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay is how intense it is. This is one of DC's most brutal movies since Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox. It definitely deserves it's r rating. Hell to Pay like most DC animated movies gives awesome action scenes. All of those scenes really helped the film not be a snooze fest. This film surprisingly has some good humor to it and it works. They also helped balance out all the intensity of the action scenes. Another thing the film did right was the animation. All of the scenes were crafted very well, the characters were never off model and the environments all looked good.
Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay is a pretty good entry in DC's animated library. The film is brutal without being stupid or over the top, the action is great, the humor is quite funny, and the animation is definitely good for direct-to-video standards. However Christian Slater as Deadshot is meh and Maxum Steel's backstory really should have been trimmed down.
My final rating is Good
And now I wait for the next DC animated movie The Death of Superman. Which reminds me before that film comes out on digital download look out for my a Look Back at review of Superman: Doomsday.
