Tomb Raider Review

Tomb Raider is an action-adventure film primarily based on the 2013 video game of the same name. The movie is produced by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Warner Bros. Pictures, and GK Films and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures. Tomb Raider is written by Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Alastair Siddons and directed by Roar Uthaug.

The story is Lara Croft is hoping to solve the mystery of her father's disappearance. Later she finds clues to his last-known destination and she embarks a perilous journey to a mysterious and mythical island off the coast of Japan. Then when the stakes get higher Lara must rely on her sharp mind in order to survive this ordeal.

Initial Reaction

Now I actually had no desire to see this movie mainly because well it's a video game movie. And as we all know those types of films the worst track record next to live-action cartoon movies. Heck I didn't even see or bothered to watch a single trailer. The only reason this movie stayed in my mind was because everyone I follow on Twitter kept tweeting about it. So then I thought "you know what Michael go see it and if it's good say how good it is and if it sucks trash it".

Cons

One problem that Tomb Raider has is exposition. There does feel like there's way too much of it. My other complaint is the writers for whatever reason decided to put a twist. It didn't really feel necessary to me. Especially since it came off as an afterthought. My other problem with the film was the villain. Mathias Vogel. He was kind of a stock bad guy.

Middle Ground

I've got nothing to say. So let's move on.

Pros

One thing I liked about the film is Lara's character. She is just put through hell in this movie. A lot of critics complained about this saying how it just made Lara an "onlooker and a punching bag ". Now I didn't enjoy seeing her get hurt but what made it good was this makes her an underdog and it doesn't make her look unrealistically perfect. Another thing I enjoyed about the movie is some of the visuals. There are a lot of shots that were pulled from the 2013 video game. Now to give my opinion on the main star of the film Alicia Vikander. Her performance was great. She sold the role and really made it her own. Another thing to enjoy in this movie is the action. A lot of great sequences that were definitely worth the price of admission.

Tomb Raider is definitely one of the better video game movie adaptations. If I had to rank it it is number one while Mortal Kombat (1995) is number two. The action was good, Making Lara not come off as the perfect heroine but an underdog was a smart move, the visuals are something the fans of the franchise will love, and Vikander's performance was pretty good. Where the film falls flat is the over amounts of exposition, a clichéd villain, and unwanted plot twist.

My final rating is and I can't believe I'm saying this about a video game movie is Good

Definitely a shocker this year well for me anyhow. Did Tomb Raider break the quote "video game curse" probably not. In matter of fact I wouldn't be surprised if next month in April Rampage sucks or next year in 2019 we have video game films that are awful. But for right now have fun with Tomb Raider.
