Avengers: Endgame is a comic book film based on the Marvel Comics' team The Avengers. The movie is a direct sequel to 2018's Avengers: Infinity War as well as the twenty-second film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Avengers: Endgame is produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. The film is written by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely and directed by Anthony and Joe Russo.
The story is after the events of Avengers: Infinity War half of all life in the universe has been killed by the incident called "The Decimation". Now the remaining team of Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy must join forces to undo what Thanos has done. Can they make everything right or will they have to adapt to this new world?
Initial Reaction
After the shocking ending to Avengers: Infinity War, I was already anticipating Avengers 4 (around this time of my thinking it wasn't called Endgame yet). Then the trailers came (the first one finally revealing the official title) and I waited and waited and waited and continued waiting. What also got me looking forward to Endgame was this was going to be the last time we see the original six Avengers together. So yes I was all aboard this movie.
Cons
My only real problem with the film was Thor's character. What the hell Russos, Markus, and McFeely?! People liked what you did with him in Infinity War because he wasn't like he was in Thor: Ragnarok. But here it felt like they took his characterization in Ragnarok and turned it up. Just why?
Middle Ground
The real grey area for Avengers: Endgame is the second acts tone and it's part of the story. Let's discuss the tone first we start out very serious but then when after a few more minutes of that we all of sudden go comedic but at the same time try to be serious but at the same time still have humor injected into it. Like could the filmmakers really not decide what they wanted to go for? Then we have it's whole story. I won't tell you what exactly it is because it's a huge spoiler I'll just say it leaves your head scartching about the previous films.
Pros
Now let's talk about the good. One thing I enjoyed was the stakes. Yes I still liked what was at risk despite the fact the tone felt like a mish mash of two different tones. The other part of Endgame you'll like is the performances. All of the acting was good. I even liked Brie Larson in this even though she didn't win me over in Captain Marvel. Another aspect to enjoy from the movie is how this really did feel like a send off to the original Avengers team. This truly felt like you were saying goodbye. The other facet of Avengers: Endgame that truly hurt and shocked me were one character's death. Don't worry I won't say who it is because this is a spoiler free review. I'll just say it was sad for me to see them go after a long film history. The final thing I'll praise Endgame for is the action but most importantly that big epic finale. Holy shit that was how you end a movie. The only thing I feel like that could rival that finale is a Star Wars or Lord of the Rings film.
Avengers: Endgame is an enjoyable movie. The stakes are high, the performances are good, it really felt like you were saying goodbye to the original six Avengers, that huge character death, and oh my god that finale battle was amazing. The mix bag is the second act in both tone and how it confuses you about the previous films. The only thing that really made me irate was Thor's characterization. Seriously Russos, Markus, and McFeely what the f*ck?!
My final rating is Good
So yeah I definitely prefer Infinity War but I still liked Endgame. Anyways that's all for me and come back next time on Monday, April 29th for my easter eggs post for Avengers: Endgame. Until then enjoy the rest of your day.
