Cinematic Disasters - Captain America (1990)

Captain America is a 1990 superhero film based on the Marvel Comics' character Captain America. It's produced by Marvel Group Entertainment and Jadran Film and distributed by 21st Century Film Corporation. The movie was written by Stephen Tolkin and directed by Albert Pyun.

The story is Steve Rogers has been chosen to become the super solider known as Captain America. After his fight with Red Skull he is frozen for many years. Then in 1993 Red Skull plans to kidnap the President of the United States Tom Kimball and brainwash him and only Captain America can stop the Red Skull's plan and save the President.

Before I get into the review let me tell you about the film's release. The movie was intended to be released in the summer of 1990 which would of put around the same time Captain America was having his fiftieth anniversary but that never happened then several release dates said it would go into theaters between fall of 1990 and winter of 1991 but again never happened. The movie would go unreleased for a total of two years before debuting direct-to-video and on cable in the United States in the summer of 1992. Then it was given a limited theatrical release internationally. And after seeing the movie I can see why it took so long for it to be released because wow is this one bad.

My Thoughts

One thing that amazes me is that the costume designers put rubber ears on the suit. I'm not kidding look at this photo.

You can tell those aren't the actors real ears because the ears are molded onto the costume and they look fake. Why did they do this when it would have been much easier to cut two ear holes for Matt Salinger.

Speaking of questionable design choices. Get a load of the Red Skull.

That's not a skull that's a tomato that was left out in the sun for too long. Also for whatever reason the writers changed him from German to Italian. I know sometimes filmmakers take some liberties when making superhero movies but somethings should stay the way they are. Such as Red Skull being German.

The quality to this film looks awful. How bad does it look? Here's a picture

Yeah this is just terrible. This movie came out in the 90's but the quality looks like an old 70's film for VHS. The movie was later released on Blu-Ray in 2013 and looking at it now it's a huge improvement. Here's an example

There's one scene from the movie that confuses me. When Captain America is strapped to a missile by the Red Skull he fires it to the White House. Captain America's brilliant idea is kick the missile's bottom half and that somehow works then the missile is redirected and both the missile and Cap land in Alaska. I know sometimes superhero films like to disobey the laws of physics but how does kicking the bottom half of a missile redirect it? Captain America is strong but he ain't that strong.

Now let's talk about Matt Salinger as Steve Rogers/Captain America. My god is  he bad. He doesn't give Captain America any charisma or energy. In matter of fact he's pretty boring to watch. Yeah the title character is the most bland part of the entire movie. Our hero is one of the many worst things about this movie.

When Captain America is finally in our time or should I say 1993 we get a cheesy montage set to the most cheesiest song that I think were more for the 80's than they were the 90's. It's almost like a parody someone on YouTube would do not actual filmmakers.

Now when Steve Rogers gets turned into a super soldier there's a hilarious scene were a German spy goes to shake Dr. Vaselli's hand. He's all calm and says Remarkable work Dr. Vaselli congratulations Heil Hitler! It was the most over the top way to kill someone. Here's the clip from that scene https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=93k6Ik7K4nM

There is barely any action scenes here. A large majority of the movie is just soap opera like romance plots. Because that's what people wanted in a Captain America movie romance subplots that take up a majority of the running time. Then when we do get an action scene is awful. The best way to describe them is if you were to take a shot every time there's a jump cut you be hammered by the end of the scene. Here's the final action scene from the movie https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z2TrASSbKIw. Again so many jump cuts.

We get no build up to when Steve Rogers gets his Captain America costume. It's after the German spy shot and killed Dr. Vaselli we cut to Steve in the hospital then the next scene he's in a plane ready to go on his first mission. And they give the weakest explanation to why he's costume is the way it is. He's costume is like that because Dr. Vaselli sure did like the red, white, and blue. I'm not making that up that is why Cap's costume is like that.

Captain America (1990) is just awful. The fake ears on the costume are stupid, the explanation to the costume itself was weak, the action scenes is just jump cut central, your not going to care for the romantic subplots, the montages are cheesy, Red Skull looks horrible, and if you don't own the movie on Blu-Ray enjoy the lackluster quality.

My final rating is Awful

So if any of you want to watch a good Captain America movie just stick with Captain America: The First Avenger, The Winter Soldier, Civil War, and the Avengers movies. Speaking on Civil War if any of you have been looking at the schedule down belong come back for my Differences Between Captain America: Civil War and Marvel Comics' Civil War. I'm doing that because I wanted to do it for fun and do something else related to Captain America.
