The Emoji Movie Review

The Emoji Movie is a 3D computer-animated comedy film based on the ideograms known as emojis. It's produced by Sony Pictures Animation and the film's distributor is Columbia Pictures. The movie is written by Eric Siegel, Tony Leondis, and Mike White and directed by Tony Leondis.

The story is Gene is a multi-expressional emoji and he sets out on a quest to become a normal meh emoji like his parents. Along the way he befriends Hi-5 and Jailbreak and they help him on his adventure. But then a great danger threatens the phone they live in so now these three unlikely friends must save their world before it's deleted forever.

  • Negatives

There are no funny moments in this animated "comedy" film. None of the jokes are witty or clever. It also feels like the writers main goal was to make jokes about the poop emoji. I'm not kidding there's like six maybe seven jokes related to him.

A large majority of animated movies such as Toy Story, The Iron Giant, or ParaNorman can make you feel something for their sad, intense, or heartfelt moments. Throughout this movie I felt nothing. I didn't tense up for the action scenes, I didn't feel sad nor did the heartfelt moments tuck on my heart strings. When you feel nothing for a movie that's a bad sign.

Every talented actor/actress in The Emoji Movie was wasted. Sir Patrick Stewart as the poop emoji he shouldn't have been here, Anna Faris as Jailbreak should have done something else, and Sofia Vergara as a flamenco dancer emoji she didn't need to be in this movie especially since her screentime was probably 30 seconds at best.

Now I don't really care for product placement in movies mainly cause I understand why it's there but the writers thought it was a good idea to have the product placement be plot points. YouTube, Spotify, Dropbox, and Instagram are actually here to help move the plot forward. And in one scene Hi-5 and Jailbreak take a ride on the Twitter bird. Also two game apps are here just to pad things out and the games are Candy Crush and Just Dance.

There's a subplot involving Gene's parents where there questioning their relationship and it's pointless. It's brought up then it's quickly resolved just as fast as it was brought up.

The Emoji Movie actually has the nerve to have a mid-credit scene. Apparently they think their going to be just as successful as the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Fox Marvel, and the DC Extended Universe. Yeah that's not gonna happen.

  • Mix

While the film does have good animation it's just a shame that the animators really could have done something great with their talents.

  • Positives

There's nothing to say here. Let's move on.

The Emoji Movie is going to go down in history as one of the most pointless films to ever be made. The jokes aren't unfunny and cringey, you won't feel anything throughout the film, all the actors should have never bothered to be here, it's ridiculous how much product placement was put in the movie, the subplot with the meh parents had no point, and the mid-credit scene is just the movie's inflated ego thinking it's worthy of being a franchise. Even though it has good animation it's not enough to make anybody like it.

My final rating for this movie is Awful
